The Object of My Obsession

Filed under: Climbing, Epics — chossmonkey @ 8:36 am

At first glance, I didn’t recognize the brown, dirt-covered face staring back at me in the mirror. I had just finished a thorough and intense 3-hour cleaning session on the object of my latest obsession, a crag half-jokingly called the Crag of the Century.

I love putting up new routes but last year I sensed that it was taking too much from me; too much blood, too much skin, too much sweat, and too much time. This year I promised to myself that I wouldn’t spend time putting up new routes. That promise was revised to, “well, maybe I’ll just focus on putting up one or two multi-pitch routes.” Then I said, “well, I’ll just put up routes on good rock that don’t require much cleaning.” That promise came to mind as I looked at the ghastly image in the mirror.

Dead Horse Crag - Glenwood Canyon - Rock Climbing - Trad and Sport
Good quartzite on Surrender to the Air at the Dead Horse Crag.

Last year I became optimistic and hopeful about the quartzite of Glenwood Canyon after developing the Dead Horse Crag. It opened my eyes to the possibility that there was good, quality, clean quartzite to be found. This spring, I found myself with time to burn and energy to spare so I hiked to the top of a quartzite cliff that had looked promising. “I’ll just rappel down the face to take a look,” I told myself. Quickly, I realized that the rock was harder than anything and the features looked amazing for climbing.

The problem, you ask? It’s true, the rock is hard and the climbing is super fun. But, the faces are cut by horizontal bands, perfect for plugging cams and shoving fingers into. They are also perfect for collecting eons of dirt, which much be brushed out and blown out. Do that a few times and you’re sure to get dirty, but I can handle that, it’s to be expected even. The other problem is there are bands of quartzite that are not solid, as if God’s kiln wasn’t quite working that day and didn’t cook the quartzite all the way. No big deal as the rock underneath is usually super hard but in 100 feet it can get pretty tiring and you start asking yourself, “did I clean that well enough or is that flake going to pry off in someone’s hands and spear their belayer?”

New Rock - Glenwood Canyon - Rock Climbing - Quartzite

Crag of the Century or Quartzite Wasteland?

Crag of the Century? We’ll see. In the meantime, I may need to spend some reflective time thinking about goals and promises. That, or invest in a gas mask, goggles and a leaf blower.

The Choss Strikes Back!

Filed under: Climbing, Epics — chossmonkey @ 11:51 pm

When you spend time in “choss land” you’re bound to take some lumps, or at least have some punches thrown at you. Such was the case this weekend on a brief outing to one of our local choss wonderlands. In Glenwood Canyon there’s a beautiful, steep wall of quartzite that rises for over 500 feet from the base. It’s immediately next to the Dead Horse Crag, a new crag we developed last year that yielded a number of great climbs on solid rock. Last weekend I went out to the area seeking a break from skiing and winter to test out some new rock in the warm sun. This weekend, I returned for more climbing and exploration of new routes.

Glenwood Canyon - Dead Horse - Quartzite Rock Climbing - Choss - The Choss Strikes Back

Sunny times on a big, ominous quartzite cliff in Glenwood Canyon.

We repeated the 60-foot tall 5.8ish crack climb that we established last week and begun toproping some of the steeper offerings on the wall. Instead of finding warm sun, we were greeted with cloudy skies and snow flurries. As the clouds began to break up, BJ was aroused from his belaying duties by an ominous “detaching” sound. He looked up the steep wall overhead to see a large chunk of rock making its way to terra firma. BJ yelled and I instinctively held tight into the wall and made myself as narrow as possible. Almost immediately I heard an ominous and scary sound of falling rock piercing the air waves, culminating in a large “whoompf” as it came to a stop. I looked down to see a couple of large rocks in a bomb hole in the snow with the remains of a scrub oak tree littered about, a mere 20 feet from where BJ belayed.

Glenwood Canyon - Dead Horse - Quartzite Rock Climbing - Choss - The Choss Strikes Back

The widowmaker in its final resting place.
A hurried exchange between BJ and I about what just occurred preceded my speedy climb to the top of the route to clean our gear from the anchor. I couldn’t stop looking up in anticipation of more rockfall as my heart tried to bound out of my chest from the adrenaline coursing through my veins. After returning to the base BJ and I quickly packed up our gear from the relative safety of the overhangs above but still peeking out to spy for more falling choss. We were making our hasty retreat from the wall when another “whoompf” sound interrupted the silence, somewhere between the two of us. BJ asked if I saw the source of the sound before taking off in a run to escape the wall that now seemed to have it out for us. I couldn’t help but look into the soil and snow for signs of the sound but I sheepishly stuck to the base while heading for safety.

After excitedly talking about the events, we agreed that a lesson had just been learned. Stay away from big, chossy cliffs with loose, overhanging rock during the spring thaw! Now safely out of the way, the sun had decided to grace us with its presence, thus making for a pleasant climbing day and allowing me to finish a project from last fall, One Hold Shy.

Not only did the experience remind us of an important lesson but it also gave us a fitting name for a new climb, The Choss Strikes Back!
Check out BJ’s version of events (albeit shorter) and a neat picture of climbing at Dead Horse at his site, SplitterChoss.com.

Follies and Fun on Disco Inferno – Part Two

Filed under: Climbing, Epics — chossmonkey @ 7:38 pm

In Part One of Follies and Fun on Disco Inferno, we climbed the first three pitches and established our bivy at a beautiful ledge. Now, here’s part two, the conclusion of the story.

Peaceful, serene mornings in Zion are some of my most memorable moments in life. As the sun slowly rises the outlines of the canyon walls begin to stand out from the morning sky and the soft sound of the Virgin River below is the only noise in the entire canyon. Peeking over the edge of my portaledge, I am reminded of the exposure and position from which I’ve just slept the night before. A soft breeze touches my cheeks, sending a shiver through my body which is warmly wrapped in my sleeping bag. This place and this time feels like it may be the most perfect thing in the world, as Joy sleeps soundly by my side. Often I enjoy laying here for an hour or more, enjoying the canyon and reminiscing about the many adventures I’ve had in Zion – laughing with friends, climbing into the night with or without a headlamp, and getting married on the sandy beach next to the Virgin River below Angels Landing. I’ve long felt like this place is a second home, or perhaps the home I was most meant to live in for the way it refreshes my soul and fills my heart with joy.

BJ and Tracy, waking up on their first morning in Zion Canyon.

On this morning, I try not to linger too long, with the knowledge that we have several pitches to climb today if we’re going to top out before dark. As I heat water for tea and breakfast, I playfully toss small rocks onto BJ and Tracy, to wake them. My role as the “Drill Sergeant” is not a role I want but it’s one that I know I must play because I know our start to this day will dictate how the end of our day turns out.

The fourth pitch and BJ’s first Zion lead.

While the girls finish packing for the day, BJ begins the first lead of the day, a seemingly benign 5.9 C1 pitch. Right from the belay he quickly encounters the kind of climbing I’ve come to expect on a non-trade route. When you venture off of the trade routes, there rarely seems to be simple, straight up and down pitches of easy free or aid climbing. On this pitch, BJ has to make some delicate, sandy free moves to reach the crack. Once in the crack, he finds atypical C1 aid climbing, calling for Ball Nuts and other small offset nuts to be sent up on the trail line. BJ has never used a Ball Nut before but I assure him that they’re bomber, not telling him that of the aid falls I’ve taken in Zion a number of them had to to with Ball Nuts ripping out of the soft sandstone.

Disco Inferno

Looking down at the fifth pitch, the “kinda-bolt ladder”.

The next pitch is one that I’ve been anxiously looking forward to for a long time. Anxious because I’m wondering how far the bolts are spaced and how blown out some of the bat hook holes are between the bolts. Looking up I realize that some of them are indeed, spaced out. Before reaching the headwall, some nasty, loose, unprotected climbing takes you to the small ledge below the headwall. I delicately “tip toe” between some loose blocks wedged in the sandy ledge. I joke with BJ that the “Choss Twins” are at it again in an effort to steady my racing heart, knowing that I could take a huge fall and pull an ugly block down onto BJ below.

A couple of ugly holes lead to the first bolt and I quickly decide to pull out the tent pole that we’ve brought along to use as a cheat stick. After taping a draw to the pole I reach up to clip the first bolt, only to have the pole awkwardly bend backwards into space after getting halfway to the bolt on the overhanging wall. The pole comically wiggles in space like a Twizzler spun from a child’s fingers. Well, this could be interesting. Quickly I realize that I need to keep the draw and pole pressed to the wall to keep it from bending out into space and once mastered, I start to make quick work up the overhanging wall. I make a few hook moves on good edges but otherwise avoid the drilled holes and use the cheat stick to go bolt-to-bolt. Every time I come to one of these holes I consider hooking it but always choose otherwise because many of them have become blown out, rounded and ugly looking. I’ve heard that Chris McNamara has offered to donate the hardware to fill the holes, which is needed, because the holes aren’t going to last as the fragile, soft sandstone can’t take the repeated use.

Halfway up the pitch I come to a dilemma. Instead of a bolt, there’s a fixed pin, which proves near impossible to clip with my flimsy tent pole. After a number of attempts I revert to trying to “lasso” the pin with a slip-knotted sling. The best I can do is getting the sling halfway over the spine of the pin, so finally I just go for it, and gently jug up the rope, all the while staring at the sling which is a mere half inch from the end of the pin. Above, I reach my next dilemma, a bolt far, far out of reach with my pole and with holes that look equally unimpressive. We brought a bolt kit thinking that if we had time we might fill some of the holes and now I ask to have it sent up on the trail line. The wall is slightly overhanging so drilling the hole out is strenuous, not because of the drilling but because of how hard it is to top step and drill. The first half of the hole goes quickly as the hole has mostly filled with sand and the rest of the hole goes with ease due to the soft stone. After 20+ minutes of effort I slide in a long, 1/2″ bolt and crank it tight. Above I am able to reach the rest of the bolts with my pole although I have to jug up a slung pin once again, carefully jugging up as I watch the sling sit precariously close to the edge of the pin.

When I arrive at the belay I look down to see that the girls have decided to bail. Tracy didn’t feel good about the exposure and it’s obvious that they won’t want to lead that last pitch. Now I feel really bad for getting us into this “mess” and BJ and I consider our options. The girls insist that they’re okay with us finishing the climb, but it feels weird to know that we drove 7 hours to have the girls jug a few pitches. Going down is an option although I half-heartedly want to finish the route so I don’t have to come back and re-lead the last pitch. Eventually, the consensus is reached, we’re going up!

Just past the crux rotten roof of the sixth pitch.

Part of me wanted to go down because I had some fear about what lay ahead on the sixth pitch. I had avoided Disco Inferno for years because of an ominous note on the topo; “rotten roof.” Bryan Bird, a local hardman, assured me that it was no big deal, but this was coming from a guy who regularly puts up new, hard aid routes on the walls of Zion. Sure enough, the roof was a sandy mess but that turned out to be the least of my concerns. The dead horizontal roof made aiding difficult as I searched for a placement above. I was aiding on a gold Camalot in an awkwardly flared placement and I wasn’t sure it was going to hold. I had good gear below me but it was far underneath the roof, ensuring that I would swing forcefully into the slab below if I fell. I started to have doubts about the route and my desire to climb it with my wife comfortably resting on the ledge below. My only good piece was a #6 Camalot, retail about $110, so there was no way I was going to bail off that, which meant the only reasonable option was continuing.

BJ jugs over the lip of the roof on the sixth pitch.
I struggled to step high in my aiders as I searched the face above for a placement. Much of the rock was sandy and it seemed like everything was out of reach. I had to use my core and leg muscles together to get above the roof and I would quickly tire, my legs feeling like they were about to cramp. After the climb, I had deep pain and soreness in my right hip and quad muscles from the strain I placed on them. Finally, I was able to reach a horizontal cam placement and move up. Then, I realized that there was a simple stopper placement hidden from my view that would have made the whole thing easier. Once again, I had let my emotions get in the way of climbing and my frustration and stress levels clouded my vision. Above the roof, the climbing was straight forward though it wasn’t the easy, “plug-and-tug” type of aid climbing I was accustomed to on the trade routes.

Disco Inferno

Jugging the final stretch of the sixth pitch while our ladies casually lounge below.

When BJ got to the belay we discussed our options. It had taken a long time to lead those two pitches, meaning we only had a few hours of daylight left. BJ was worried that he would take too long and I was exhausted mentally from the previous two pitches. At this point I felt really bad about our route choice, knowing that it was my suggestion to climb Disco Inferno. Now, it felt like a selfish thing as I had led almost all of the pitches and the girls had already bailed. It was supposed to be a fun, first big wall experience for BJ and Tracy and it appeared that I had only dragged everyone along for a thrashing. All I wanted was for people to have a good time and I felt like I wasn’t even having a good time myself. I desperately wanted for BJ to take the lead but I also knew that if we were to top out that I would probably need to lead the last pitches. My internal battle with my feelings only exhausted me more before I finally took the rack to lead the next pitch.

Finally, I was climbing a pitch that was easy, straight forward and quick. When I reached the belay I pulled up the extra rope and short fixed, knowing that I could probably rope solo the last short pitch to get us to the top. But, I hesitated and my struggle for motivation dug in. Looking at my watch I knew we had enough time to top out before dark but then we would be relegated to rappelling in the dark. Every time I’m confronted with a decision like this I’m hit with a flood of emotions, many tied to life questions and not just climbing: “Am I getting too old and conservative that I’m unwilling to go for the top anymore?” “Am I slowing down?” “Am I getting old?”

BJ and I sat there for a while, enjoyed the splendor of Zion and decided that we were okay with not finishing the final 50 feet of climbing. Would we regret it later? Probably not when we were hanging with our wives at the ledge below, which seemed the most important thing in the world at that moment.

Disco Inferno - Zion National Park - Rock Climbing - Big Wall Climbing - Aid Climbing

Finishing the eighth pitch.

We began rappelling and everything seemed like it would go smooth and we would quickly be with our lovely ladies. I was a little nervous about rappelling the overhanging face but we had just seen some guys rappel Desert Shield the day before so I tried to ease my fears. At the first challenging rappel station I was able to easily swing in and clip the anchor. Ahh, no problem, I thought. As darkness neared I took off my helmet to put on my headlamp. Absentmindedly I forgot that I had my glasses on, which I had worn all day because my eyes had become irritated from all of the sand. They slipped off my face and I fumbled at trying to catch them, only to see them come to rest on BJ’s arm. “Don’t move your arm…what?…ohhhh no.” They were gone as I watched them free fall through the air and disappear below. Great, those were brand new this summer after I lost my other pair of glasses while swimming in Chasm Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. Joy’s going to kill me and now I’m going to be seeing all blurry for a while.
On our next rappel the girls said they could see the rope and it was only five feet from our bivy. I was surprised to hear that our rope would reach that far but off I went. It was now dark and with my headlamp I could see the anchor but I couldn’t see how far our ropes reached, but I assumed they reached past that anchor and to our bivy. As I neared the anchor an overwhelming sense of fear rushed over me as I realized that I was five feet from the ends of my rope and ten feet above the anchor. I hate rappelling in general and I particularly hated the thought that I was that close to slipping off the ends of the rope and into the dark void below. My frustrations and stress from the day’s events came out in an obscenity-laced string of wild exclamations. I bounced and swung on the rope but knew there was no way I could get another five feet of stretch to reach the anchors, which was probably what made me so frustrated. There I was, just fingertips away from the anchor but seemingly helpless. All I wanted was to be safely at our bivy with my wife and the last thing I wanted was to be dangling in space. After calming myself down I jugged back up the ropes to the anchor above me. There, BJ met me and we finished our rappels, this time much more calmly.

Of course, it wasn’t quit over. The fifth pitch overhung steeply so I clipped a number of bolts to help swing me into the wall and to the anchor below. Particularly after my previous rappelling epic I had no desire to be swinging around in space with the anchor out of reach. When BJ came down he cleaned the draws as he went and I helped hold him into the overhanging wall. But, at the bottom of this steep pitch, BJ was having a hard time cleaning the draws and it seemed like he would have a hard time swinging into the anchor to meet me, despite my best efforts at pulling him in. To combat this he left a couple of bolts clipped because who cares about a $5 carabiner, right? It worked great until we pulled the rope and you guessed it, the knot came tight into the draws. I was so frustrated and done with the climb that I offered to just cut the rope and buy BJ a new one. Luckily, BJ was of a more sound mind so he jugged up one rope and re-clipped the draws so that the rope could be pulled. After returning to the anchor we made one final rappel to our wives below and a much-desired, well-earned beer with our warm dinner.

John Travolta looks over the PBR that awaits another crew at the shared bivy for Disco Inferno and Desert Shield.

That night, it was all I could do to down some dinner and drink a couple of beers before passing out on the portaledge. I was exhausted and embarrassed at making stupid mistakes, getting scared, and most of all, picking the wrong route for our friends in their quest to climb their first wall.
The next day we stashed a few leftover beers for future climbers, which only made me more embarrassed – I mean, what kind of wall climbers are we that we can’t even drink all of our beer? After getting all of our big wall crap down from the wall I searched in vain for my glasses in the bushes and ledge systems at the base. A few years ago I found my friend’s lone key in the detritus below Moonlight Buttress so I had some hope, particularly after Joy found one lens. It wasn’t to be, so we hiked back to the car, me feeling somewhat defeated even though I wanted to feel good about finally doing (kind-of) a route that I had my eyes on for a long time. I started to wonder if they would ever get sick of me apologizing for my route selection and making plans for another wall only seemed to add insult to injury.

In the end, with over a month of reflection, I guess it wasn’t that bad of a deal. We all had fun, we slept on ledges, climbed some neat and challenging pitches, and we’re still great friends, which is probably the most important thing of all. Rest assured, we’ll be back, although this time maybe we will do something a lot easier, even if I’ve already done it two, three or four times.

Follies and Fun on Disco Inferno – Part One

Filed under: Climbing, Epics — chossmonkey @ 7:34 am

I throw my haul bag down in frustration next to the trail, sweat dripping from my brow and small bush branches still stuck in my shirt, my shoes and my hair. How could I have so grossly missed the start of the trail? After a good bushwhack to find the real trail, I yell down to my wife, Joy, and our friends, BJ and Tracy, warning them to find the correct path. It’s then that I overhear the stressed dialogue between BJ and Tracy about the location of their brand new Black Diamond portaledge. I remember seeing BJ set it on the side of the road while he went back to the car to help Tracy and now he’s frantically searching the roadside. By the time I get to the road, we’ve surmised that someone has taken it, most likely a white van. BJ and I jump into my car and scream down Zion Canyon and I already have images in my mind of the kind of brawl that might ensue. When we come around the corner at Big Bend we spot the van and make a “Starsky and Hutch”-like screeching halt in front of the van, blocking their exit from the pullout. Turns out it’s a tour operator from Vegas with a heavy Asian accent who thought he was doing the park a favor by picking up the “abandoned” gear to take to the rangers.

Wow, this is not how we envisioned this trip to go. We’ve already wasted a good chunk of the day taking the dog to the Doggy Dude Ranch, drinking coffee, eating breakfast, getting permits, buying gear, searching for a “wall mascot”, and lounging around Zion looking at climbs. It doesn’t help that the girls are somewhat skeptical as BJ and I, the so-called “Choss Twins” have chosen our climb, Disco Inferno. I’ve assured them that the “Pretty Damn Disco” rating on the topo doesn’t mean anything sinister and that this will be a fine climb for first-time wall climbers BJ and Tracy.

Packing it all up. That’s a lot of crap!

Disco Inferno - Zion National Park - Rock Climbing - Big Wall Climbing - Aid Climbing

Joy, striking the Disco Inferno pose. Check out the rack on her!

Disco Inferno is a short, 5 to 10 minute hike from the car but it feels like it takes a lifetime to pack everything up and get our stuff to the base. Our short detour to reclaim the ledge provides some fun excitement and soon we’re at the base, racking up for the first leads. In the interest of time, it’s decided that yours truly, the Choss Monkey, should fire up the first two pitches to give us a good start on the wall. Things go smoothly and soon I’m hauling up our wall gear: one full-size haul bag, two small haul bags, two portaledges, and a 5-gallon food bucket.

Disco Inferno - Zion National Park - Rock Climbing - Big Wall Climbing - Aid Climbing

Joy supervises the hauling while BJ does the work, just the way it should be, right ladies?

I’m exhausted from hauling a gazillion pounds of stuff and I’m seriously planning on BJ taking the next lead, an ominous looking squeeze chimney, but when he looks up he quickly pulls out some lame rationale of why I should lead it. Great, come on twin choss brother!I wiggle my way into the back of the chimney where I could start to get some purchase and look up at my first runout. No one ever falls out of these things, right? I awkwardly make my way up to my first protection, a flake on the inside of the chimney. When I reach up to place a #2 Camalot the flake discharges a mouthful of sand in my face. I wiggle the cam around a bit and realize that I’m only making the placement bigger so I pull it out and place a #3 Camalot and leave it. No one falls in these things, right? As I slither my way up, I occasionally tap on the flake and the sound it makes serves as a nice, comic relief for my friends at the belay below. We laugh and I plug some gear behind our acoustic flake and move on. No one falls, right? The squeeze ends and I am forced to leave the relative security of the chimney for difficult and insecure stemming between the wall and the upper chimney. Again I place some gear in a suspect crack which BJ will later laugh about and get to the anchor.

When BJ follows he inexplicably decides to follow the climb free in his approach shoes. At 5.8 on the topo it can’t be that hard, he reasons. Lesson learned he makes it to the belay but he is spent.

Disco Inferno - Zion National Park - Rock Climbing - Big Wall Climbing - Aid Climbing

Maybe I shouldn’t have climbed that in my approach shoes?

With our daylight quickly waning, we establish camp and enjoy a beautiful evening, a great dinner and a few beers, all making the day’s events wash away in a cloud of laughter as smiles grace everyone’s face.

Crack Climber

Courtesy of one of my fine high school students, comes this photo of me, reputedly on a first ascent of a crack. I can’t say how classic it may or may not be, but it was certainly a “hairy” lead.

Sorta-epic on the Clyde Minaret

Filed under: Epics — chossmonkey @ 8:29 pm

Clyde Minaret - Sierras - California

The Clyde Minaret is the most prominent and most classic of the many peaks of the Minaret range, outside Mammoth Lakes, California. Its’ Southeast Face is included in the book, Fifty Classic Climbs of North America and the range has some fascinating history of first ascents by the likes of Norman Clyde and others. Last summer, my wife Joy and I wanted to climb Clyde but we ran out of time on our road trip. We balked at the logistics of getting an overnight backcountry permit and dealing with Devils Postpile National Monument. Hence, we decided that doing it in a day would be the best option.

Clyde Minaret - Sierras - California

This summer we returned and the Clyde was near the top of our list. Again, we thought doing it in a day would be a good idea but hesitated when we examined the endeavor – 9 miles of hiking with 3,800 feet of elevation gain and then the rock climb on top of it, and back out. With our friends Mark and Katie we started to make plans for a multi-day jaunt but somehow decided that a long day climb would be the best option.

Clyde Minaret - Sierras - California
Clyde Minaret - Sierras - California

Mark and Katie are great, and no slouches at all, but you’d think somebody would have stopped and asked how fast four people can hike and climb together compared to two people, particularly Joy and I ,the ultramarathon runners. After getting a slow start out of camp, we left the trailhead and started hiking at 5:30 A.M. The hike went quick although the last part of the approach on climbers’ trails and scree scrambling put us behind schedule, arriving at the base at about 10:00. We quickly set off, with one person leading and belaying two people behind them. Peter Crofts’ guide, The Good, the Great and the Awesome, is a fun guide to read but is poor on route description. Initially we thought we had linked pitches and would top out in a few hours but instead we realized that Croft also must have used long pitches. Inexplicably, no one really put two and two together to see that a grade IV would be long and worthy of the 13-pitch description Croft describes.

Clyde Minaret - Sierras - California

Despite our concern about time, the day was perfect with typical, clear, Sierras-style weather, enabling us to top out at 4:30 without worry. We spent time on the summit, enjoying food and the view, before heading down with the expectation that we would soon be hiking and doing the last part of the trail with headlamps. No big deal, right? Wrong.

Clyde Minaret - Sierras - California

The descent begins with a fourth class ridge scramble to some “inobvious” fourth class down climbing to the scree below the ridge. We had just begun the descent down the ridge when the girls, in the lead, saw rappel slings, dropping down the north side of the Clyde, into an unknown gully on the opposite side of the peak from the standard descent route. Slightly sketched by the thought of descending fourth class, the girls made a case for rapping into the gully, which they felt confident, “would be a quick hike down.” Mark and I weren’t so sure but we eventually gave in. Of course, foreshortening happens in both directions, up and down, and the lake that looked so close was really much farther away.

Clyde Minaret - Sierras - California

We carefully began rappelling and scrambling down the choss-filled gully. Sure enough, the gully became a series of cliffs with a number of rappels or uneasy down climbs. Shoddy anchors and loose rock had us all on edge and we were constantly on the lookout for sheltered areas to hide in when we pulled the ropes. Two hours after beginning our descent we felt confident that we could hike out and we took our harnesses off and put away our ropes. We would have been able to hike out if we had known where to go. We kept going straight down which led to wet, grassy ledges intermixed with wet, slippery slabs. Eventually we became “cliffed out” again and set up another rappel at an old fixed hex, at least someone else had been there before.

Clyde Minaret - Sierras - California

At 8:30, 3-1/2 hours after beginning our descent, we were able to put away the harnesses and ropes for good. By then, darkness had fallen and we donned headlamps. Actually, three of us donned headlamps because one of us, me, was confident enough that a headlamp would be unnecessary because we would cruise the hike and climb.

Clyde Minaret - Sierras - California

Now, in the darkness with the short reach of our lamps we picked away at the faint trails leading down from the Clyde to and around Minaret Lake. Numerous times we lost the trail and became lost in a maze of mini-peninsulas and inlets on the lake. We all remembered the main hiking trail below Minaret Lake as being wide and sandy but somehow in the course of one day, it became a jumbled, rocky mess, making our progress slow.

At 11:00 three of us stopped for a bathroom break. When Mark, who was in the rear, didn’t come behind us on the trail we began yelling for him. Then, we hiked back on the trail, only to find all of his gear on the trail with no sign of him to be found. Our calls went unanswered and we began searching the surrounding area, including the creek. Our initial thought was Mark had stepped off the trail to go to the bathroom or dip his tired feet in the creek. When we couldn’t find him and there was no answer, all kinds of scenarios started racing through our minds. Could he have slipped into the rushing, strong current of the stream? Could he have fallen while hiking into the woods and injured himself? Had he been attacked by a bear or mountain lion? We searched and searched and searched. Initially our impulse was to be mad at Mark for not telling us where he went. Then, after half an hour of searching, that anger turned into horror at the thought of having to go get a search and rescue team and having to tell Mark’s parents that he was missing, or even dead. I had just finished a book about a rescue for a ranger in Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Park so I went into rescue mode, trying to plan our search and make a plan. Eventually, Mark came strolling down the trail, oblivious to why we were so worked up and angry with him. He had dropped his stuff to go back up the trail to look for his camera, which Katie had the whole time.

Back on the trail, we struggled through the darkness with sore feet and tired legs. It ended up taking us longer to hike down than it did to hike up. Near the finish we missed the in-obvious trail junction that led to the car and started hiking down the wrong trail. When I realized our error I told our group that we had to turn around. It wasn’t clear if we were indeed in the wrong and Joy was so tired and frustrated that she refused to turn around. She said she didn’t care if she was going the wrong way because she just wanted to keep hiking. A small fight ensued, with dirt and rock being thrown at me. Begrudgingly, she followed us as we turned around and eventually, found our way to the right trail and the last mile to the car.

At the car, it was 2 A.M. and talk or thoughts of finding a restaurant was long over and all we could think about was getting back to camp. I kept dozing off while driving the 30+ minutes back to camp and seconds after the doors slammed shut on the car, we were splayed out in our tents, making the most of our well-earned sleep.
